Gary Nelson
was elected to the Snohomish County Council
in 1994 and re-elected in 1999 and 2003 to
represent the Third Council District in
Southwest Snohomish County. He chairs the
Transportation & Public Works
Committee, and is a member of the
Administrative Committee, Finance Committee,
Operations & Performance Audit Committee,
Planning & Community Development Committee
and Law & Justice/Human Services Committee.
Gary’s
previous elected experience includes seven
years as an Edmonds City Council member and
22 years in the Washington State
Legislature, including eight years as a
State Senator. |
Gary
presently serves as chair of the Snohomish County Health District
Board, and serves on the Community Transit Board and Community
Transit Executive Committee. He is a member of the Regional
Transportation Investment District Planning Committee and Executive
Board, serving as its chairman until 2005. Gary is also a member of
the Puget Sound Regional Council Transportation Committee and the
Regional Transportation Leadership Group.
Gary
is a board member of the Washington State Association of Counties,
chair of the Urban County Caucus and a member of the Legislative
Steering Committee. He is a member of various civic organizations
including Lynnwood Rotary, the Edmonds Historical Museum and Sons of
Norway. The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce honored Gary
in 2005 with the Outstanding Community Service Award.
After
receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from
Washington State
University and a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin,
Gary served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force before working in the
private sector for 28 years in research, engineering and management.
He and wife JoAnne live in Edmonds and have three sons and five
grandchildren.
